[15 Sep 2008|10:06am]

Hello!! So I just got a new desktop and I put my iTunes on it, but instead of putting ALL my cds on the desktop again, I was wondering if there was a decent free program where I could put my music from my iPod to my desktop. It seems silly to buy something when I only need to do it once and it's done. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!

Powerbook G4 [01 Aug 2008|01:57pm]

One of the hinges of my Powerbook G4 broke a few weeks ago, and the colors on the screen have gotten worse and worse (right now the screen is totally blank and I cannot use it). Is there no way to fix it? I know it was discontinued last year and the model is known for having weak hinges. The clerk at the macstore called it an "antique" and said I would have to get a new one. I had my laptop for only three years and was hoping it would last me through college.

[22 Jul 2008|09:52am]

I've just bought myself a bluetooth mighty mouse as the trackpad on my MacBook is slowly but surely dying (and I can't afford to get it replaced just now - I'm in the process of losing my job, so as you can imagine, this is all wonderful timing) and lo! the bluetooth is only working intermittently. Obviously, the simplest solution would be to take the mouse back and exchange it for a wired one, but that's really not the point.

Does anyone have a reliable fix for this? I've googled and checked out the various forums, but have yet to find anything that works. I've tried resetting the PRAM and repairing permissions. I've also tried standing over the machine and shouting at it. I'm running 10.5.4 and have no idea how long this problem may have been going on, I've only just needed to use the bluetooth function. My MacBook is well and truly out of warrenty, and of course I have no AppleCare (the company that has been draining my resources for the last year promised to buy me some, but never actually bothered despite frequent nagging).

Thanks in advance for any help.

domainhosting on .mac/mobileme? [15 Jul 2008|03:24pm]

does anyone know if it is possible to actually host a domain on a .mac/mobileme account?

The only thing I've been able to find has been a tutorial on how to forward a domain to one but no information on how to actually host it there.

Macbook broken piece [12 Jul 2008|01:15pm]

I didn't buy the extended warranty when I bought my macbook because, I don't know, I don't remember my reasoning at the time. Either way, it's been more than a year. But anyway, I had a little piece of the casing break off where the lid closes and it's something super common that has happened to about a billion other people, so I called up my local apple repair store and they said I could bring it in. Now, because I don't want to call them back for the 7th time because I keep forgetting to ask this, do you think they would be able to fix it on the spot? I am in school and refuse to let them keep my macbook for more than a couple of hours. They won't have to send it in or anything, will they? Does anyone have any experience with this?

eMac Problem(s) [27 Jun 2008|04:15pm]

[ mood | frustrated ]

I have an eMac (OSX 10.3.9, 1.25GHz Power PC G4, 256MB RAM) and for some unknown reason, the amount of space on my HD keeps dropping to Zero KB.

I have a second HD, which has over 190GB free, and I've transfered as many files as I can to that, but the problem keeps happening. At the moment, I'm blessed with 185MB so at least I can open programmes.

I recently added another user, partitioning the drive, and wondered, might this has anything to do with it?

I'm also thinking of increasing the RAM (hopefully, one day, I'll update the OSX too!): can I take out the 256 and replace it with two 512s?

(Is there an eMac community out there? I couldn't find one via the LJ search.)

Memory swap? [28 Apr 2008|03:55pm]

My friend just got a new Macbok Pro. It has 2G RAM.

I have one of the very first Intel iMacs. It has .5G RAM.

If my friend upgrades to 4G RAM, can I put his old RAM into my machine?

trouble with word for mac [30 Nov 2007|11:47am]

I got a macpro this summer and got word for mac installed. Now I'm having some problems with people telling me they aren't able to open my word documents. I believe they are all trying to open the word documents from PCs, if that makes any difference. Any idea what the problem is, is it my computer that I need fixed, is it the software that is faulty, or are my mac word documents just not going to open on other people's PCs, etc?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Communication Problem? [18 Oct 2007|09:15am]

So I have an iBook and an eMac.

The iBook connects to the web without trouble.

The eMac keeps freaking out and refusing to connect.

Any hints?

Firefox refusing to run Yahoo mail? [19 Sep 2007|11:41am]

Constantly been told 'unable to establish a connection to 'the server at login.yahoo.com'.

It's not happening with any other sites, and I've not been messing around with the cookies or firewall settings at all. Any suggestions?

Nintendo DS [03 Sep 2007|08:03pm]

I have a Nintendo DS. I have an Intel Mac with a 2meg broadband modem (not wireless.)

Is there any way of using my Mac to play my DS online without buying a wireless router?

playing large mpeg-4 files [23 Aug 2007|12:33pm]

I've been given a load of videos formatted as mpeg-4 and weighing in aroung 200MB, but Quicktime Player is freezing and crashing when I try to view them. Any advice?

I'm running a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB RAM, OS 10.4.10, if that helps.

Curiously, I have some 500MB+ mpeg-4 files which run perfectly in both Quicktime and Front Row.

a few questions about OS X and GNU/make/etc. [21 Aug 2007|06:52pm]

[ mood | confused ]

I'm working on a G-4 running OS X (10.3.9 if I remember correctly) and trying to set up a few things. A Jabber/XMPP Server for one and a mail server for another. However I've noticed that all the binaries for PowerPC OS X XMPP servers I can find error out at some point on install and for some reason it doesn't seem to have "make" or any of the other GNU/Linux/*nix command line functions I'm used to when dealing with the source installs.

So my main questions are:
1) How does one go about installing "make" and all the libraries it needs to successfully run in OS X? Is it any different for 10.3.9?

2) Does anyone know of any tutorials on doing the above or any quirks I may run into?

3) Does anyone know where I can find possibly the binaries for an install of a mail server or Jabber/XMPP server for OS X?

Thanks, and apologies for some cross posting, having a hard time finding resources on this on google or in "the missing manual" and still pretty new to the deeper parts of os x.

Energy saving/screen savers [21 Aug 2007|11:48pm]

I'm watching videos with my web browser and the screen dims after about 5 minutes, necessitating mouse movement to see what's going on. Is there any way to turn this off? Ideally, I'd have screen saver only come on when I use a hot corner, and for that to dim and go black within a minute or so.

Mighty Mouse scroll ball [17 Aug 2007|12:29am]

It's really becoming a struggle to make it register vertical scrolling. Down more so than up.

It does scroll when it 'clicks', but it doesn't click very much. The ball rolls OK.

What's the usual trick for sorting this out?

Transferring files from Ipod to computer? [22 Jul 2007|01:10pm]

Long story short, my hard drive became corrupted and had to be replaced. I want to copy the songs from my ipod onto my new hard drive. I called Best Buy and asked if they had any type of program that would allow me to do this, and I got a lecture on copyright infringement. Does anyone know of any programs I could download online that actually work and won't screw up my computer?

[28 May 2007|06:50pm]

I have a question! Okay, so I have a bunch of movies on my computer that I ripped to put on my iPod. Now that they're on my iPod, I wanted to delete them from my computer cause they take up a lot of space. IS there anyway I can do that without them also being taken off my iPod when I plug it into my computer?
